About the hall
Just one hour north of Melbourne and looking out to majestic Hanging Rock, Newham Mechanics Institute has been at the centre of this picturesque village for over 115 years. Featuring a permanent exhibition of photos dating back to the 1850s, the hall has provided great service as a location for meetings, polling booths, parties, weddings and more – and enjoys a small place in Australian political folklore as the birthplace of the National Country Party.
Extensively refurbished in 2009, the hall’s boutique size and rustic charm offer plenty for locals and visitors, whether as an intimate performance venue or a highly sought-after hire facility. Seating about 100 in the comfortable ambience of cabaret-style tables and chairs, the hall has played host to a variety of performers – from comedy A-listers Fiona O’Loughlin and Denise Scott to local and international musicians, such as acclaimed founder of the Go-Betweens Robert Forster.
